At a glance
- Choose an exchange that lists SOL where you live, then check the fee, total cost and SOL you will receive before you confirm.
- Pick the Solana network on the withdrawal screen. A Solana address is 32 to 44 letters and numbers, never a 0x address.
- Each Solana account keeps a small refundable minimum balance, so a tiny first transfer to a new wallet can fail.
- In the US, a Solana ETF (as of October 2026, for example BSOL) is a fund share, not SOL you can send.

To buy Solana (SOL), pick a crypto exchange that lists it, place a first order and, if you want your own Solana wallet, withdraw on the Solana network. Two things are specific to SOL. Sending it on the wrong network can lose it for good, and a very small first transfer to a new wallet can fail.
What you need before you start
How to buy crypto lists the basics: ID documents, a payment method, a phone for two-factor authentication (2FA, a second check besides your password) and a small budget. To withdraw, you also need a wallet that supports Solana, set up beforehand.
How to buy Solana step by step
Choose an exchange that lists SOL
Which platforms you can use depends on where you live, so run the registration check first. What exchanges and broker apps are is covered in the pillar's steps.
Then read the fee page and help center. SOL must be available where you live, and the platform must allow withdrawals to an outside address if you want your own wallet.
Open, secure and verify your account
Register with a fresh password, enable the strongest two-factor option, then finish verification inside the exchange's official app or website only.
Add money
Each payment method has its own fee and timing (payment methods compared). Look for any wait before the money, or the SOL bought with it, can be withdrawn.
Buy SOL and check the order
To buy SOL, select it on the buy screen and enter the amount. Confirm the ticker reads SOL, and read off the fee, the total price and the SOL you will get; if any is not shown, ask support before confirming. Order types, holds and what to save are in the checklist. Your tax position depends on where you live (crypto taxes by country).
Choose where to keep your SOL
Leaving SOL on the exchange takes no extra steps, and the exchange holds it for you. For a wallet you control, set one up first and read how to store Solana safely before you move anything.
Withdraw SOL on the Solana network
Copy your address from the wallet's receive screen with its copy button. On the exchange, open the withdrawal screen, choose SOL, paste the address, select the Solana network and enter the amount. Before you confirm, find the withdrawal fee and the amount that will arrive; if the screen shows neither, ask support. The screens are in how to send crypto to a wallet.
Example with made-up numbers
The price, the fees and the minimum balance below are all invented to show the sequence, and the real minimum is changing (see the section on the minimum balance).
- You deposit 300 by card. A deposit fee of 6 is taken, so 294 arrives.
- A trading fee of 4 is taken from your 294 order, leaving 290 to spend. At a price of 20.00 per SOL, that buys 14.5 SOL, about 20.69 per SOL for the 300 you paid.
- You want to test your new, empty wallet with 0.0005 SOL. In this example its minimum balance is 0.001 SOL, so a test below that can fail.
- You send 0.05 SOL instead, well above the minimum. The exchange's withdrawal fee is 0.001 SOL on top, so 0.051 SOL leaves your balance and 0.05 SOL arrives.
- Once that has arrived, you send the rest.
Where to buy Solana
You can buy Solana crypto at a crypto exchange or a broker app. For a wallet, the question that matters is whether the place lets you withdraw SOL at all. How to choose a crypto exchange covers the wider checks.
Solana ETFs: a share, not SOL
A Solana ETF is a fund share. In the US, as of October 2026, one example is the Bitwise Solana Staking ETF (BSOL), which trades on NYSE Arca. Bitwise says (opens in a new tab) an investment in BSOL is not the same as a direct investment in Solana. You own a share, not SOL, so nothing about wallets, withdrawals or addresses applies to it.
Fees to expect
Crypto exchange fees explained covers what the exchange charges. This guide gives no fixed SOL withdrawal figure, so read the fee on your exchange's withdrawal screen before you confirm. If it shows one fee, check whether it includes the network fee.
As of October 2026, on the Solana network itself, the base fee (opens in a new tab) is 5,000 lamports per signature, which is 0.000005 SOL (1 SOL is 1,000,000,000 lamports). A transaction can also carry an optional priority fee that raises its scheduling priority. If a transaction fails, the fee is still charged.
Solana addresses, networks and the minimum balance
A Solana address is 32 to 44 letters and numbers. It does not use the 0x format, so an address starting with 0x belongs to a different network. Solana addresses have no built-in typo check, so a mistyped address can still look valid. Copy addresses rather than typing them, and use the network field on the withdrawal screen to select Solana.
Solana keeps a small minimum balance in each account. It is a refundable deposit, not a fee, and nothing is charged over time for it. Solana's docs tell exchanges (opens in a new tab) that every SOL deposit or withdrawal must be at least that minimum, so a very small first transfer to a new, empty wallet can fail.
The amount is changing. As of October 2026, Solana's reduced rent upgrade (opens in a new tab) is cutting the minimum in steps that began in September 2026, and more cuts are expected in November 2026. Look for the current minimum in your wallet's or exchange's help pages, or ask support. For the first transfer to a new, empty wallet, send well above it.
How to store Solana safely
On an exchange, the exchange holds your SOL. In a wallet you control, you hold it, and the wallet gives you a recovery phrase, a list of words that restores the wallet. A Solana wallet creates it when you set it up, before any SOL arrives.

Risks to understand
- Price swings. Prices move, and you could lose all the money you put in.
- Platform failure. The exchange holds crypto left on it. If you keep crypto on an exchange explains what to check.
- Unwanted tokens. Phantom says (opens in a new tab) anyone can send tokens or collectibles to your wallet without your permission, and receiving one does not mean your wallet is compromised. Do not follow links or instructions that come with an unfamiliar asset.
If you plan to use your own Solana wallet, read what a seed phrase is before you buy.
Frequently asked questions
How much money do I need to buy SOL?
As little as the exchange's minimum purchase allows, which is on the order screen or in its help pages. Pick an amount you could lose in full, because prices move. If you plan to withdraw to a new wallet, keep enough for the first transfer to clear the minimum balance.
What happens if I send SOL to an Ethereum or Bitcoin address?
Do not send it. An address that starts with 0x cannot be a Solana address, so stop and ask the receiver for a Solana one. If you already sent, contact the platform you sent from right away and give it the transaction details. Funds sent on an incompatible network may be permanently lost.
