eToro is an investing app that also sells cryptocurrency, and an eToro crypto review starts with one question: does your buy give you coins? As of October 2026, eToro says a plain buy may in some cases be executed as a CFD, which gives you none, so read the trade window for the "CFD" label before you confirm.
What eToro offers and where
As of October 2026, eToro is a broker app: an investing app that sells crypto next to other products, run by a different eToro company in each market. A CFD (contract for difference) is a contract that follows a price up or down and gives you no ownership of the asset. eToro also offers shares and copy trading (CopyTrader).
Whether eToro cryptocurrency buys give you owned coins depends on where you live:
- United States: eToro's US crypto page (opens in a new tab) states that a non-leveraged buy gives you the underlying cryptoasset, and that ownership terms vary by product and jurisdiction.
- United Kingdom: the FCA bans firms acting in or from the UK from selling crypto CFDs to retail clients (see crypto vs CFD).
- EU and EEA: ESMA's interim MiCA register (opens in a new tab) lists eToro (Europe) Ltd as authorized by CySEC. The fee page does not name countries for the CFD rule explained in crypto vs CFD.
- Canada: in its March 2026 annual report (opens in a new tab), eToro says it does not provide services in Canada.
- Australia: eToro's Australian fee page (opens in a new tab) states that opening a crypto position gives you ownership.
We read eToro's pages, regulators' pages and eToro's March 2026 annual report on 20 October 2026. We opened no account and placed no trade, so this is a documentation review, not a hands-on app test. Fees come from eToro's international fee page unless a sentence names the US or Australian page. eToro warns that CFD overnight fees may change without advance notice, and its US wallet guide (opens in a new tab) says transfer fees could change daily.
eToro against the eight checks
As of October 2026, the table shows what eToro and regulators publish on each check from our exchanges page. "Documented" means the answer is published; it is not a score.
| Check | What eToro publishes | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Authorized where you live | Company and register per market; UK, EU and New York entries found on regulator pages | Partly |
| Security features | SMS or call 2FA, optional biometric login, segregated custody; insurance excludes owned crypto | Partly |
| Clean track record | SEC order (2024), ASIC case with no published outcome, Italian fine (2023), CySEC inquiries | Documented; actions listed below |
| Total cost per purchase | 1% fee for lower Club tiers plus a market spread; no spread size | Partly |
| Payment methods | Conversion fees by method; deposit routes not checked | Not checked |
| Coins and networks | US page: more than 100; no count found for other markets; about 40 coins can be transferred | Partly |
| Withdrawals to your own wallet | Two steps via the eToro crypto wallet, 2% capped fee, then network fee | Documented |
| Support you can reach | Chatbot, Help Center, Customer Service | Documented |
eToro crypto vs CFD: how to tell what you hold
As of October 2026, eToro's fee page (opens in a new tab) states that short selling and leveraged crypto positions are executed as CFDs, and that due to regulatory requirements some non-leveraged buy positions may also be executed as CFDs. Any CFD trade is marked "CFD" in the trade execution window.
CFDs carry their own costs. On the international page, a crypto CFD costs 1% per trade as an opening or closing spread, and crypto overnight fees are charged daily. eToro's risk warning says 51% of retail investor accounts lose money trading CFDs with this provider. The figure changes: in August 2023, ASIC noted (opens in a new tab) that eToro's site then said 77%.
Rules differ by country:
- Germany: non-leveraged crypto CFD positions opened by German clients do not incur overnight fees, which shows such CFDs exist for German clients.
- Spain: since 2 August 2024, new users from Spain cannot trade CFDs, following guidance from Spain's CNMV.
- United Kingdom: the FCA banned the sale (opens in a new tab) of crypto derivatives, including CFDs, that reference unregulated transferable cryptoassets, to retail consumers by firms acting in or from the UK from 6 January 2021, and confirmed in 2025 (opens in a new tab) that the derivatives ban remains.
eToro crypto fees
As of October 2026, eToro's fee page (opens in a new tab) states that every spread, commission and charge is listed on the trade ticket before you confirm. Compare the fee on the ticket with the percentages below. If they differ, ask Customer Service before you buy.
Costs of buying, selling and holding:
- Trading fee. Bronze, Silver and Gold members pay a flat 1% per position on manual crypto trades, on buying and on selling. Platinum, Platinum+ and Diamond members pay reduced rates: 0.95%, 0.90% and 0.85% in the lowest monthly volume band, falling as volume grows. CFDs, Smart Portfolio and CopyTrader are excluded. On the US page (opens in a new tab), the 1% has been shown as a separate cost before execution since mid-July 2025.
- Spread. eToro says the market spread is the difference between the bid and ask prices, varies with market conditions and is not a cost it charges. It publishes no spread size. To see it, read the spread on the trade ticket or compare the buy and sell prices shown for the coin: the gap between them is the spread (see how the spread and trading fees work).
- Inactivity fee. The fee page lists it as free.
- Deposit fee. Open the deposit screen and the fee page for your payment method and read the charge before you pay. For bank transfers, eToro's deposit help page (opens in a new tab) says the banks involved in the transfer may charge you, so compare what your bank takes with what eToro credits. If the screen shows a charge the fee page does not, ask support.
- Currency conversion. Depositing or withdrawing in a currency other than USD incurs a conversion fee, and the page lists a separate rate for local currency accounts. Diamond members are exempt and Platinum and Platinum+ members get 50% off. The conversion fee page (opens in a new tab) lists rates by currency and payment method, in pips or percentages. Check it for your currency before you deposit.
Costs of moving money out:
- Withdrawal to a bank. Outside the US, no fee applies to a withdrawal from a local currency account (GBP, EUR or DKK depending on your country) to an external account. A flat fee shown on the fee page applies to withdrawals from the USD account, and a minimum withdrawal applies. The US page lists no withdrawal fee for US brokerage accounts, also with a minimum.
- Wallet and network fees. See the eToro crypto wallet.
The eToro crypto wallet: moving coins out
As of October 2026, eToro's customer service page (opens in a new tab) states that the separate eToro Money app was set to be discontinued on 9 February 2026 and that its features are in the Wallet tab of the eToro platform. This guide calls it the eToro crypto wallet.
Moving crypto from your eToro investment account to the wallet costs 2% of the transaction size, taken in units of the coin, with a minimum and a maximum cap shown on the coin transfer page (opens in a new tab). Outside the US, that page says the move is one-way: coins cannot be moved back. eToro's US wallet guide (opens in a new tab) says the wallet supports transfers back into the investment portfolio. Read the page for your own market before you move anything. Outside the US, eToro's fee page (opens in a new tab) also lists a 0.6% to 1% fee, by Club tier, when you sell crypto for GBP, EUR or USD inside the wallet, and says an estimated fee is shown before you complete the sale.
Not every coin or country is covered. The transfer service is offered only in listed countries, subject to eligibility, and Canada is not on the list. Per transaction and per day limits apply, listed on the wallet fee page (opens in a new tab). Outside the US, that page names etoroX Limited (Gibraltar) as the provider. In the US it is eToro USA LLC, and eToro's US crypto page (opens in a new tab) says the wallet supports transfers only to and from wallets you own.
For sends to or from an external source, the wallet fee page says eToro does not charge and only the blockchain (network) fee applies. For Germany, eToro's fee page says Tangany GmbH processes and charges crypto transfers under its own terms. For how to choose the right network, read how withdrawal networks work.
Availability by country
As of October 2026, eToro's regulation page (opens in a new tab) names the company for each market. A registration is not a safety guarantee. What each company may offer differs, and the coin list varies by country.
United States
eToro's US fee page (opens in a new tab) says crypto trading is offered by eToro USA LLC or eToro NY LLC, depending on where you live, and is not available in Hawaii, Nevada, Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands. Its state disclosures page (opens in a new tab) lists the licenses. NYDFS lists (opens in a new tab) eToro NY LLC with Virtual Currency and Money Transmitter licenses from February 2023.
eToro's US crypto page (opens in a new tab) lists more than 100 cryptoassets, with a more limited selection for New York residents. eToro says eToro USA LLC and eToro NY LLC, its US crypto companies, are not registered broker-dealers or FINRA members, and that US crypto holdings are not FDIC or SIPC insured.
United Kingdom
The FCA register (opens in a new tab) lists eToro (UK) Limited as authorized since 9 May 2013 (reference 583263). The entry also says the firm is registered with the FCA for anti-money laundering purposes as a crypto firm, and that its authorized permissions do not include any crypto products or services. The entry adds that for crypto products you have no access to the Financial Ombudsman Service, and that money tied to crypto is not protected by the FSCS if the firm goes out of business.
The FCA warns that scammers have copied this firm's details, so use only the contact details on the register entry. Read the UK crypto cooling-off period before a first purchase.
EU and EEA
ESMA's interim MiCA register (opens in a new tab) lists eToro (Europe) Ltd as a crypto-asset service provider authorized by CySEC in Cyprus on 16 January 2025. The listing covers custody, exchange, order execution, transfer services and others, with services listed for 30 EEA countries, including Cyprus. eToro states the same on its regulation page. For Germany, eToro says custody runs through Tangany GmbH.
Canada
In its March 2026 annual report (opens in a new tab), eToro says that after a 2018 Ontario Securities Commission proceeding it paid an administrative penalty and ceased providing services in Canada, and that it would need licenses to resume. The crypto transfer country list (opens in a new tab) does not include Canada either. If you live in Canada, check eToro's current position with Customer Service before you try to deposit.
Australia
eToro lists eToro AUS Capital Limited under Australian Financial Services Licence 491139. Search that number or the company name in ASIC's professional registers (opens in a new tab) yourself. In its annual report, eToro says the company is registered with AUSTRAC as a digital currency provider. Search "eToro AUS Capital" in AUSTRAC's Virtual Asset Service Provider Register (opens in a new tab). Some coins cannot be transferred for ASIC-regulated clients, as listed on the coin transfer page. The ASIC court case is in the record.
Other countries
Check your own country's financial regulator before you deposit. For what availability means, read exchange country restrictions.
Regulatory and security record
As of October 2026, regulators' pages and eToro's own filing show the following about eToro companies. Each item is separate.
Regulatory actions
- In the United States in September 2024, the SEC announced (opens in a new tab) that eToro USA LLC agreed to pay $1.5 million to settle charges that it operated an unregistered broker and unregistered clearing agency for crypto assets traded as securities. Without admitting or denying the findings, eToro agreed to a cease-and-desist order and to liquidate within 187 days crypto assets offered as securities that it could not transfer to customers. eToro announced that US customers could trade only Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash and Ether afterward. In its March 2026 annual report (opens in a new tab), eToro says it expanded its US offering to over 100 cryptoassets during 2025.
- In Australia from August 2023, ASIC began Federal Court proceedings (opens in a new tab) against eToro Aus Capital Limited over its CFD product, in its first design and distribution action. ASIC alleges the target market was far too broad, the screening test wholly inadequate and almost 20,000 clients lost money trading CFDs between 5 October 2021 and 14 June 2023. It seeks declarations and penalties. The hearing was listed to continue on 27 and 28 April 2026, and we found no outcome published by ASIC. These are allegations, not findings, and eToro's annual report says the proceedings are ongoing.
- In Cyprus, eToro's annual report discloses that CySEC has made inquiries into possible breaches of product governance, appropriateness and suitability rules by eToro (Europe) Ltd for its retail CFD offering. No outcome is published, and an inquiry is not a finding.
- In Italy in July 2023, the competition authority fined (opens in a new tab) eToro Europe Ltd 1.3 million euros for misleading information about share trading, including a "zero commission" message that did not highlight other costs. The case concerned shares, not crypto. We did not check whether it was appealed.
- In the Philippines in March 2024, the annual report says the Philippines SEC issued an advisory that eToro was not authorized to offer securities there.
Web searches covering FCA, CFTC, OFAC, FinCEN, NYDFS, FINRA, AUSTRAC and ESMA pages on 20 October 2026 found no other action. A search miss is not proof that none exists.
Security features and custody
eToro's protection page (opens in a new tab) describes two-factor authentication (2FA, a second check besides your password) by a code sent through SMS or phone call, and optional Face or Touch ID login in the mobile app. It mentions no authenticator app or passkey. Turn 2FA on and check your settings for any stronger option, then follow how to secure an exchange account.
The annual report says eToro keeps customers' crypto in segregated omnibus wallets, separate from its own, using hot and cold storage. Omnibus means pooled, not one wallet per customer. The report also says no cybersecurity incident has materially affected eToro, and we found no publicly confirmed breach of eToro systems in the last five years. That is not a guarantee.
eToro's insurance page (opens in a new tab) says its insurance covers cash, CFD positions and securities, but not real crypto positions. It is available only to Platinum, Platinum+ and Diamond members who are customers of four eToro companies (Europe, AUS Capital, ME and Seychelles), and eToro may withdraw it without notice. For what failure means for cash, shares and crypto in one app, read cash, shares and crypto in the same app.
Support you can reach
As of October 2026, eToro lists (opens in a new tab) an automated chatbot, a Help Center and a Customer Service team, reached through the Customer Service Center. Its protection page (opens in a new tab) says eToro will never email you to ask for your password or other sensitive information.
Downsides to weigh
As of October 2026:
- Owned crypto is not covered by eToro's insurance, and crypto at eToro (UK) has no FSCS or Ombudsman cover, per the FCA register.
- Crypto is not offered in four US states or territories, and eToro says it does not provide services in Canada.
- The SEC order, the ASIC case with no published outcome, the CySEC inquiries and the Italian fine are part of the record above.
- A manual crypto trade costs a 1% fee in the lowest Club tiers plus a market spread whose size eToro does not publish, and outside the US the 2% move to the wallet cannot be reversed.
- A documentation review cannot test how the app or support behaves, or confirm every register entry.
Alternatives by type
Compare any option against the same eight checks.
- Another broker app sells crypto next to shares. Check which company holds your crypto and whether you can withdraw it.
- A crypto exchange is a marketplace for coins. Our Kraken review shows one, with its own drawbacks.
- A Bitcoin-only service sells just Bitcoin, so you give up choice of coins. Check its withdrawal rules.
Before you sign up anywhere, read how to buy crypto step by step and compare platforms on the exchanges page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep using eToro if I move to another country?
Not necessarily on the same terms: as of October 2026, eToro's regulation page names a different eToro company for each market, so the register entry and product set for your new country may differ. Ask eToro Customer Service before you move, and do not deposit again until you have an answer. Look up the company for your new country in its register first.
Is there a waiting period before I can move coins to the eToro wallet?
There can be, if you are a new user who paid by card, PayPal, Trustly or eToro Money; bank transfer deposits have none. As of October 2026, eToro's international coin transfer page says a new user who deposited by one of those methods can move coins to the wallet only while the equity left after the transfer still covers those deposits. That limit lasts for a set number of days after the first deposit: up to 60 for card and PayPal (30 for Diamond members), 7 for Trustly and up to 30 for eToro Money. The US page was not checked, so read the page for your market.
Which coins can I move to the eToro crypto wallet?
As of October 2026, eToro's international coin transfer page lists about 40 transferable coins, including BTC, ETH, XRP, SOL, ADA and USDC. The page marks 1INCH, CRV and SUSHI as not transferable for ASIC-regulated clients, and CopyTrader and Smart Portfolio crypto cannot be moved. Check the page's current list before you buy a coin you plan to withdraw.
